About

TRECK is a GUSD program providing services for students with disabilities (17-22 years old) with IEPs who have finished high school without a diploma and need continued support following a plan for their future. Taking a holistic approach, we help students who plan to be fully independent in their 20s and beyond transition smoothly into adult life by helping them with career planning, social networking, and independent living skills.

Program & Structure

Life is not one size fits all. It’s choose your own adventure. Each of our students has a unique path so we meet them where they’re at and serve as a guide on their journey. In order to do this, we have flexible meeting locations and times to authentically support students needs. Upon enrollment, students identify goals which determine objectives which determine their plan and schedule.

  • Based on:  Individual goals, objectives, and schedules
  • Meeting size:  1 on 1 – Small group
  • Times:  Everyday – 1x/week  |  ½ hr – 3 hrs/day
  • Locations:  College campus, Library, Coffee shop, etc.  |  In Person, Virtual, Call/Text

Topics & Skills

The sun shines and rain falls on everyone so we cover every aspect of life from simple to complex, easy to uncomfortable. The most important skills that we help students develop are self-advocacy and self-determination, aka SPEAK UP FOR YOUSELF and FIND A WAY. Learning these skills and how to use them tactfully and consistently is vital for all of us. For a more comprehensive list of skills, check here.

TRECK Students:

  • Establish future goals with specific objectives and target dates to make real progress
  • Start their career path through employment, internships, work experience, education/training, and more
  • Build strong social connections, both personally and professionally
  • Develop confidence to navigate the variety of life’s situations and relationships
  • Assess their own strengths and needs to utilize skills and identify areas of growth
  • Evaluate their progress to determine next steps

Eligibility

Our students are preparing to be fully independent and make all of their own big life decisions in their 20s and beyond. Yes, they will get advice from the best sources possible, but in the end, they will make these decisions. This means that in the near future they will fully support themselves, be capable to handle independent living (finances, meal prep, household organization, commuting, etc.), and effectively navigate life’s ups and downs.

With this in mind, students entering TRECK:

  • reside within Glendale, Montrose, La Crescenta, & La Canada
  • do not have a high school diploma
  • have finished high school and are 17-22 years old

Eligibility is based on each individual’s needs and determined by the IEP team during the IEP meeting.

So much is Just 3 goals.  We support students as they:

RELATE               Establish and maintain a strong social network

WORK                  Seek and maintain employment

How TRECK Works

(the nuts and bolts of what we do with each student)

1. SET GOALS

independent living, relationship, & employment goals

2. CREATE OBJECTIVES

all the small steps between now and when goals are met

3. MAKE A PLAN

what, when, where, and how things will get done

4. START & FOLLOW THROUGH

work, college, volunteer, career education, connection to agencies, & independent living skills practice with support as needed

5. RE-EVALUATE

re-thinking the plan & making changes as needed

CONNECTIONS

We help connect students to services they may need now and in the future.  These are some of the organizations we connect students with
